Baltimore man accused of killing a 16-year-old as part of a Black Guerrilla Family gang rite has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and related charges, prosecutors said. On Thursday, a jury was unable to reach a verdict against William Key, 21, who was accused in the Oct. 13, 2007, slaying of Deron Hope. Prosecutors say Hope was killed by Key and co-defendant Kenneth Robbins because Robbins wanted to be initiated into the gang. But after the hung jury, Key suddenly pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, the same charge Robbins pleaded to in May. Robbins is to be sentenced in November.

Sentenced a Black Guerrilla Family member to life in prison for executing a learning-disabled recruit who didn't meet standards as a drug dealer.The victim, 18-year-old Derius Harmon, was shot in the eye two days after he joined the gang because he had made mistakes handling drug money. His body was dumped in a vacant house in the 2200 block of Barclay St., where it was found May 2, 2007.On Thursday, Judge John C. Themelis sentenced Bryant Williams, 25, of the 5400 block of Todd St., to the life term, plus 20 years for using a handgun in a violent crime, after describing the killing as "one of the most egregious crimes ... that I've heard in a very long time." Harmon had lived in a group home because of learning disabilities, his mother, Andrea Jones, said in a victim impact statement. Black Guerrilla Family smuggled drugs, weapons, cell phones and luxuries into Maryland prisons, where members continued to operate the drug ring.The U.S. Attorney's office announced indictments Thursday against two dozen people associated with the gang.Prosecutors say the 16 men and eight women were members or associates of the Black Guerrilla Family, which is active in prisons nationwide.Prosecutors say those charged include guards and other prison employees who helped smuggle contraband.
