Steven Armento,accused with "Sopranos" actor Lillo Brancato Jr. of fatally shooting an off-duty police officer during a burglary has been convicted of murder.Steven Armento, 51, faces a possible sentence of life in prison without parole after jurors found him guilty Thursday of first-degree murder while committing a felony in the Dec. 10, 2005, death of Daniel Enchautegui. Sentencing was scheduled for Nov. 14.
Armento and Brancato broke into a basement apartment to steal prescription drugs after a night of drinking at a strip club, according to investigators. Enchautegui, who lived next-door, confronted them after hearing noises in the apartment.Prosecutors said Armento fired at the 28-year-old officer with a .357 Magnum, hitting him once in the heart. The dying officer fired back and wounded both men.A nurse's aide testified during the trial that Armento bragged from his hospital bed that he would be "a king in jail" for killing a police officer.Brancato, 32, who appeared in the 1993 movie "A Bronx Tale" with Robert De Niro as well as "The Sopranos," is scheduled to be tried on second-degree murder charges next month.

William (Billy) Bowden, 33, pleaded guilty in a Winnipeg courtroom today to carrying a firearm in a careless manner in January 2007 and skipping out on his preliminary hearing about a year later. Other drug and weapons charges related to the 2007 incident were stayed as part of a plea bargain securing the two convictions. Bowden remains in custody though, charged with manslaughter in relation to the November 2007 killing of Jeff Engen, who was fatally stabbed at the Empire Cabaret, prompting the club to close. That charge remains before the courts. Bowden has been in custody since he was arrested Feb. 14 in Whistler, B.C., and returned to Manitoba. At a detention review on Thursday, the IRB said that Tran will stay at the Calgary Remand Centre because he broke his release conditions and is considered a flight risk. The bonds posted for someone's release is forfeited to the Canadian government if release conditions are not met, according to the Canada Border Services Agency. The Calgary police and the CBSA supported keeping Tran in custody. Calgary gang investigators said previous attempts on Tran's life and his gang involvement created security risks for both him and the public if he was freed. A permanent resident who moved to Canada in 1993, Tran racked up a criminal record in Calgary that includes two convictions for drug trafficking and one for assault with a weapon, so immigration officials issued a removal order for him on April 20, 2004.
